The
planning committee and local arrangements
committee have developed a variety of
interesting tours for
Montreal
’08 meeting attendees.
We encourage you to participate in one of
the tours.
Tours are included full meeting
registrations for both professionals and
students and one-day registrants and guests will
pay a $50 tour fee.
Agriculture
and Agri-Food
Canada-Horticulture
Research and Development Centre
The Horticulture
Research and Development Centre is one of
Agriculture and
Agri-Food
Canada's
network of 20 research centres. Located in
Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Québec, the Centre's
mandate is to conduct research in the areas of
crop breeding, sustainable production, pest
management and preserving the quality of crops
after harvesting. Scientists specialize in
market garden crops, tree fruits, berries and
ornamentals. This tour will provide an overview
of the research center in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu
and of the research plots located at the nearby
L’Acadie research farm.
McGill
University-MacDonald Campus
The Macdonald Campus of McGill University, which
occupies 650 hectares in a beautiful waterfront
setting on the western tip of the
island
of Montreal,
is home to McGill’s Faculty of Agriculture and
Environmental Sciences.
This family friendly tour will take a look at
McGill facilities on campus such as the
Morgan Arboreteum (Canada’s
largest), the Lods Agronomy Research Centre
(Seed Farm) and the Ecomuseum. Participants in
this tour will have a chance to relax in this
gorgeous setting while enjoying an outdoor\
lunch (weather permitting) and a poster
presentation session of current research
projects taking place on campus.
Montreal
Botanical Garden
With its outstanding collection of 22,000 plant
species and cultivars, 10 exhibition
greenhouses, some thirty thematic gardens, and
teams of researchers and activities staff, the
Montréal Botanical Garden ranks as one of the
world's largest and most spectacular botanical
gardens. This
Montreal
institution is 180 acres, houses 10 exhibition
greenhouses and over 30 outdoor gardens abound
with the colors and fragrances of the world. The
Chinese and
Japanese
Gardens
offer exotic landscapes, whereas the Tree House
displays Québec's abundant forest wealth. In the
First
Nations
Garden,
you can discover the relationship that 10
Amerindian nations and Inuit nation of Québec
have always maintained with the world of plants.
Behind
the Scenes of the
Montreal
Botanical Garden:
visit of the inner workings of the Montreal
Botanical Gardens (spaces are limited: selection will be confirmed). This tour
will include a visit of the research area of the
botanical gardens and introduction to the
research being carried out.
